The Sir Syed Emerging Scholar Award

The Sir Syed Emerging Scholar Award (SSESA) was conceived in 2006 out of the desire give something back to our beloved alma mater, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The idea to help fund and mentor meritorious students from AMU in achieving their dreams of higher education emanated from a few inspirational conversations. The conceptualization and execution of SSESA followed over a period of several months. The Aligarh Alumni Association of New England (AAANE) enthusiastically supported us in this endeavor and the first batch of SSESA candidates were selected in 2007. The urgency for programs like SSESA is necessitated by the fact that several bright students at AMU give up their hopes for pursuing higher education in United States and Europe because of the substantial costs incurred in the application procedure and the mandatory standardized tests. SSESA is designed to identify motivated and talented students who may be currently enrolled at AMU or may have recently graduated, and help them pay the fees for university applications as well as standardized tests such as GRE and TOEFL. In total, SSESA covers about 600-700 USD per candidate. However, our responsibility does not end here. Securing admission into good universities relies heavily on the quality and strength of the complete application package. This includes the statement of purpose and the curriculum vitae besides test scores. We consider the candidates academic interests and assign mentors that specialize in those fields. These experts volunteer to provide routine feedback to the applicants and guide them through the entire application process. By providing this unique amalgamation of financial aid and mentorship, SSESA aspires to create a platform by which meritorious students from AMU can take the next step in fulfilling their aspirations. Though in only its third year of conception, SSESA is immensely proud to be already associated with numerous success stories. The success of a noble mission is often measured by its self-sustainability. An unwritten agreement based on trust between the candidates that succeed and this mission is that they automatically become an integral part of this movement. They will eventually contribute financially and intellectually to the growth of SSESA. In fact, an underlying objective of this program is to develop leaders for tomorrow, young men and women who will shape the future of society. The overall vision of SSESA exceeds beyond the success of individuals. The collective accomplishment of all these young students will undoubtedly be a true reflection of the mission and ideals of AMU.
